In 1988 when Mike Parker was elected to represent the Fourth District of Mississippi in the United States House of Representatives, Mr. Rhodes joined his staff to serve as Chief of Staff, legal counsel, and as an advisor on legislative matters. He served in that capacity for more than a decade until Congressman Parker retired in 1999. Mr. Rhodes' dedication to the institution of Congress was recognized in 1996 when he was named as a recipient of a fellowship from the John C. Stennis Center for Public Service – the first Mississippian to receive the prestigious award named after Mississippi's former Senator. After being narrowly defeated in his own race for Congress in 1998, Mr. Rhodes was named President and Chief Executive Officer of the Church of God Benefits Board, Inc. in Cleveland, Tennessee. The Benefits Board manages a pension plan for ministers and church-related employees, operates a loan program for first mortgage church loans, and oversees the investments of the Board. Although now out of day-to-day politics, Mr. Rhodes maintains a keen interest in politics, having served as an election observer in the contested Florida presidential election in November 2000 and as a member of the Republican National Committee’s Legal Strike Force in Ohio during the 2004 presidential election. Mr. Rhodes, known simply as Art, is married to the former Angela Jolly of Meridian, Mississippi. They were married in May 1988 and have a son, Taylor, born in October 1994, and a daughter, Katelyn, born in October 1997. Art has been a lifelong member of the Church of God and has been very active in community and church activities, having once served as a summer missionary to the West Indies. He is a member and on the Pastor’s Council of the North Cleveland Church of God, a member of Gideons International, state chairman of New Century Project, on the board of directors of the Cleveland Rotary Club and the United Way of Bradley County, on the Executive Committee and a Director of the Church Benefits Association, and serves as Chairman of the Cleveland Rotary Foundation. |
